Colleagues remember Professor D. Wayne Goodman

D. Wayne Goodman

(1945-2012)

D. W. (Wayne) Goodman passed away on Monday, February 27, 2012 at the age of 66, after a two-year battle with cancer which he fought with the same intensity as he brought to everything in his life. Those of us who knew him as a friend, scientific colleague and/or academic colleague greatly benefitted from that intensity, and are deeply saddened by this loss. His stellar research in unraveling the surface chemistry of catalysis has had a tremendous and lasting impact on this field.

Goodman made many seminal contributions to our understanding ofheterogeneous catalysis. His creative experiments used well-defined model catalysts to decisively identify numerous surface structure-function relationships in bimetallic catalysts and in oxide-supported metal nanoparticle catalysts and their underlying mechanistic explanations. His innovative approaches to establishing surface structure - function relationships in these areas have paved the way for many of the other groups who later became active in this arena. His papers and talks in this area eloquently outline how one could approach industrially-important yet fundamental questions in catalysis. Many researchers were stimulated by the excitement and clear-headed logic he projected, subsequently shifting their own research in the directions he had chosen.

One of Goodman's most important contributions has been in understanding oxide-supported metal nanoparticles and the relationships between their structure and catalytic activity, selectivity and sintering rates. Consider alone his 1998 Science paper where he and his students elegantly combined STM and reaction rate measurements to show that atomically cleanand well-definedgold nanoparticles, 2-3 nm in size, supportedon an ordered TiO2(110) surface, are exceedingly active as oxidation catalysts, whereas particles larger than 6 nm are completely dead. This, together with Haruta's earlier work in this area, led to the recent explosion in papers related to this subject. One can hardly open an issue of any of the major journals in catalysis or surface science which does not include at least one paper related to this topic. Goodman's paper alone has now received over 2000 citations.

In a similar manner, several other aspects of Goodman's research became the focus of much later research throughout the world. One cannot have a serious discussion about any single topic in bimetallic or alloy catalysis without citing some of Goodman's work that elucidated some fundamental feature of these systems. His most recent work in this area on PdAu alloy catalysts for vinyl acetate synthesis has elegantly established the atomic-level structure of the catalytically active site.

Goodman published ~500 papers, almost exclusively in the field of surface science, with 50 of these having more than 100 citations each. He currently receives ~1600 citations per year, with a career total of ~24,000 citations and a Hirsch index of 76.

Goodman's research has been recognized by numerous awards, most notably: elected Fellows of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the ACS, the AVS and the IOP; the Gabor A. Somorjai, Arthur W. Adamson and Colloid and Surface Chemistry Awards of the ACS; the Burwell Lecturer, Humboldt Research Prize, and Ipatieff Lecturer. He served on the editorial boards of this and many other journals, and served multiple officer roles in the Colloid and Surface Chemistry Division of the ACS all the way up from Treasurer to its Chairman.

Goodman received his PhD in Physical/Organic Chemistry in 1975 from the University of Texas in Austin, with his research directed by Prof. M.J.S. Dewar. This included some of the earliest measurements and full analyses of the photoelectron spectra of inorganic molecules. He then spent five years at the National Bureau of Standards (later NIST), working as an NRC Associate under the supervision one of us (JTY) and Ted Madey, before becoming a NBS staff member. At NBS he left photoelectron spectroscopy of molecules to become a prominent leader in the measurement of the kinetics of catalytic chemistry at high pressures on metal single crystals. He was very early in applying surface science measurement methods to model catalysts, looking for structure-reactivity relationships, and understanding poisoning. He then worked at Sandia National Lab. from 1980-88, as research scientist and then Division Head. He then moved to Texas A&M University as a Professor of Chemistry, where he remained until his death, when he was holding the titles of Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Robert A. Welch Chair.

On a personal level, Goodman was exceptionally likeable and fun to be with, exhibiting an unusual capacity to forge deep and lasting friendships with almost everyone. He was dedicated to his loving and beloved wife, Sandy, for 44 years, and his son, Jac. He possessed an infectious enthusiasm for science, life and people. He was a dedicated and beloved mentor to his students and postdocs, and extremely supportive of coworkers and senior colleagues alike. He possessed incredible skills with instrumentation, and was an amazing reader, with a superb memory for and grasp of the literature, both scientific and other. He enjoyed and thrived on competition and debate. He was an inspirational and eloquent speaker. He had unsurpassed humor and story-telling ability that captured eloquently the human condition, and most of his public lectures on scientific topics began with one or more humorous stories widely anticipated by the audience. As a younger man he was an outstanding athlete. He was an avid pilot of experimental airplanes, and crashed from the sky three times. He prided himself on his successful attempts to defy gravity in this way, and even jokingly referred to his confidence that he could beat cancer as just another metaphorical example. Indeed, he bought himself another plane just two months before his death to prove that point. Alas, it was not to be.

We speak for a large fraction of the readership in saying that this wonderfully humorous and likeable scientific powerhouse and friend will be sorely missed.

Sad News: Loss of Professor Wayne Goodman

Texas A&M Mourns Loss of Distinguished Chemist Wayne Goodman

COLLEGE STATION -- Dr. D. Wayne Goodman, an internationally recognized Texas A&M University chemist whose many pioneering career achievements helped revolutionize physical chemistry, died Monday (Feb. 27) after a long and difficult battle with cancer. He was 66.

Arrangements for a local memorial service will be announced at a later date for the esteemed researcher and teacher, who came to Texas A&M in 1988 as a full professor in the Department of Chemistry. He was named a distinguished professor of chemistry in 2000 and had held the Robert A. Welch Foundation Chair since 1998 after previously serving as a Welch Professor from 1994-98. Goodman also served as director of the Center for Catalysis.

"Wayne was an outstanding teacher and a distinguished researcher in the field of surface science and catalysis," said Dr. David H. Russell, Applied Biosystems/MDS Sciex Professor of Mass Spectrometry in Chemistry and head of the Department of Chemistry. "He was a valued colleague and will be greatly missed."

Goodman received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas in 1974 and, after a NATO postdoctoral fellowship in Germany, was employed at the National Bureau of Standards outside of Washington, D.C. for four years. From 1980-88 he worked as a research scientist at Sandia National Laboratories, serving as head of the Surface Science Division for the last three of those years, prior to coming to Texas A&M.

During his nearly 25-year career at Texas A&M, Goodman made countless contributions to teaching and research across many areas of chemistry -- primarily, fundamental issues related to chemisorption and reaction at catalytic surfaces using the full array of modern surface science techniques.

"In addition to his academic achievements, he was a gentle soul with a delicate sense of humor and one of the most congenial of our colleagues," said Dr. Ronald D. Macfarlane, a longtime colleague and fellow distinguished professor of chemistry at Texas A&M. "I will miss him as a friend and a fellow faculty member."

Goodman's record of professional service and related recognition was nothing short of impeccable, as evidenced by one organization in particular: the American Chemical Society (ACS). In addition to selecting Goodman to its inaugural class of fellows named in 2009, the ACS has honored him with its Ipatieff Award (1983), Colloid and Surface Chemistry Award (1993), Adamson Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Surface Chemistry (2002), Gabor A. Somorjai Award for Creative Research in Catalysis (2005) and Southwest Regional Science Award (2010).

In 2010 the ACS further celebrated Goodman -- who authored more than 500 publications and book chapters while serving as an active member and officer of ACS and a number of international professional societies -- with a complete volume of its flagship physical chemistry publication, The Journal of Physical Chemistry, dedicated to Goodman and his lifetime research achievements across the discipline (J. Phys. Chem. C, Vol. 114, No. 40, 2010). In the following excerpts from an autobiographical piece prepared specifically for that edition, Goodman recounts his early days at Texas A&M, the secret to his success and his proudest achievement:

"In 1988 I accepted a full professorship at Texas A&M University in the Department of Chemistry. I decided to venture into academics for no particular good reason other than the realization that science is clearly most efficiently carried out in an academic setting; that is, graduate students work much more cheaply than national lab technicians and postdocs. Of course, you do have additional responsibilities at a university; for example, teaching, committees, etc. In any case, I loaded the trucks and headed east from Albuquerque to College Station. (I note, parenthetically, contrary to the rumors, all the equipment transferred from Sandia to Texas A&M was indeed legally acquired.) I had prebuilt much of my equipment before arriving, so we made a very quick start. The university and departmental faculty/staff facilitated in every way possible my transition, and, for that matter, have always by their actions made it impossible for me to seriously consider moving elsewhere.

"I recruited a stellar first class as well as subsequent classes of students whose names appear on the student roster. The group and equipment grew rapidly, as did the scientific output. It was hard work, indeed, but there was never any looking back. I still feel the same today. I credit any good things that happened here or, for that matter, at any time during my career to the hard work of my students and other co-workers. If I have any skills at all, most certainly the sharpest is that of recognizing good talent, recruiting the owner, and tagging along. This I have been very successful in doing during the last 22 years at TAMU. Continuously, I have had a superb group of highly active and extremely talented graduate students and postdocs, all of whom have gone on to establish their own successful careers. For this, I am the proudest. The science has been incredibly amusing, but seeing students develop into seasoned scientists, moving on toward their career goals, and building successful lives is a supreme rush for me."

Goodman's myriad career recognitions beyond ACS include the British Vacuum Society's Yarwood Medal (1994), a Humboldt Research Award (1995), a Texas A&M Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Research (1997), the Giuseppe Parravano Award (2001), a Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Award (2002), the Texas A&M Research Foundation's JoAnn Treat Research Excellence Award (2008) and the Sigma Xi Distinguished Scientist Award (2009). In 2009 he also was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Beyond the world of chemistry, Goodman was an avid private pilot and shared a love of aviation with his father and his son.

Goodman is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sandy, of College Station; his son, Jac Goodman, son-in-law, Steven Teiler, and grandson Eitan Teiler Goodman of Washington, D.C.; his father, Grady Goodman; a brother, Garon Goodman; and a sister, Marcalyn Price.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley at www.hospicebrazosvalley.org. Cards, letters and other written forms of condolences also may be addressed to the Goodman Family in care of the Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77843-3255.

Announcing the 2012 ACS Fellows Program

The Fellows nominations online system will open February 27, 2012 and the due date for all nominations will be April 23, 2012. The Division can endorse the nomination of up to eight ACS Fellows. Our Division has been very successful in getting members elected as Fellows and we hope to continue this trend this year.

Please remember the two criteria for this nomination include:

1. Excellence and leadership that have a lasting beneficial impact in science, the profession, education, and/or management.

2. Volunteer service in the ACS Community resulting in significant enhancements to ACS programs, products, or services.

Nominees for ACS Fellows must be current members in good standing of the ACS (i.e. dues paid up). You can find more information on the program on the web at
www.acs.org/fellows.

Please send names of people who you think meet these criteria (preference of course goes to a division member - anyone can become a division member any time at a nominal cost) to Vicki Grassian at vicki-grassian@uiowa.edu along with a brief statement about their contributions in both research and service to ACS by March 10, 2012. In addition, let us know if you are planning on nominating that individual (or the name of someone who could serve as nominator). From that list, we will put forth eight nominations from the Division. The full nomination package, which consists of a nomination form plus three letters of recommendation, must be submitted by April 23, 2012.

Remember that ACS members in good standing can make nominations directly. However, nominations made through the Division will have the full endorsement of the Division, as expressed by Vicki Grassian, 2012 Chair of the Division, through a letter that will be provided for each candidate.

Please feel free to contact Vicki Grassian if you have any questions about this process. The Division officers and executive committee members thank
you in advance for your suggestions.
